What you need to get verified, and why
Understand the checks iKhokha completes before your business can be approved to accept payments.
To get your business set up to accept payments, iKhokha needs to understand what your business does, confirm your identity and residential address, and check the bank account that will receive payouts.
These checks are a normal part of setting up your iKhokha profile. They don't mean there's a problem with your setup.
Why iKhokha verifies your details
FICA stands for South Africa's Financial Intelligence Centre Act. It sets requirements for financial-services businesses to identify their customers and understand who they're dealing with. You may also see the term KYC, which means Know Your Customer.
These checks help prevent fraud, identity theft, tax evasion and terrorist financing, and help iKhokha make sure it has the correct details for your payouts.
Provide your business details
The information and documents you need depend on your business type. Choose the option that matches your business:
Confirm your identity
When you set up your iKhokha profile, you'll need to enter your South African ID number and complete a face scan. If you don't have a South African ID number, you'll need to enter your passport number and date of birth.
For your face scan:
Allow camera access when prompted.
Stand in a well-lit area.
Remove anything covering your face.
Position your face within the frame and hold still while the scan completes.
If you denied camera access, follow the steps in Complete your face scan if you denied camera access.
Identity documents
If you're a South African citizen or permanent resident with a South African ID number, iKhokha may also ask you to upload a photo of your original identity document while completing your details online.
Accepted identity documents include:
Green ID book.
Smart ID card, front and back.
Driver's licence, front and back.
If you're not a South African citizen, you'll need to email through the following:
A copy of your valid, unexpired foreign passport.
A copy of a valid residence, work, study, asylum seeker or spousal permit.
If you have a spousal permit, a copy of your marriage certificate.
Confirm your residential address
You'll need to provide your residential address to help iKhokha verify your details.
If proof of address is requested
Your proof of address must meet these requirements:
It must be a municipal bill, bank statement or rental agreement.
It must be no older than three months.
It must clearly show the address being verified.
Tax invoices and affidavits aren't accepted.
Verify the account where the business will receive payouts
You'll need to provide the bank details requested for your business type. iKhokha checks these details to confirm the account that can receive your payouts.
The account must be in the correct name for your business type. For example:
Registered business: the bank account must be in the registered business's name.
Sole proprietor or sole trader: the bank account must be in the owner's name.
To see the specific bank account requirement for your business type, choose the option that matches your business in Get started with iKhokha.
Confirm that you can act on behalf of the business
If you're setting up the business on behalf of someone else, iKhokha will ask for additional documents to confirm that you're authorised to act for the business.
This includes:
A resolution letter signed by the directors, members, partners or trustees, as applicable. You can use the resolution letter template.
A selfie of one director, member, partner or trustee holding their identity document.
A copy of that person's identity document.
The documents needed depend on your business type and circumstances. Once you've completed the details online, iKhokha may request additional information by email. Keep a lookout for an email and send any documents requested by iKhokha to onboarding@ikhokha.com from the same email address you used to create your iKhokha profile.
